Design a world (week 9-12)

Week 9 STORYBOARD & FINALISING CHARACTERS

On Monday Alec suggest us to start developing a 30-sec storyboard for an intro to the narrative in our worlds.

Group Change

This round we had some of our members of the group switched over. Jack and John had moved to another group whereas two new members (Sian and Ryan) had joined our group.

We introduce ourselves and began introducing our world to them and how we are getting on so far. We began discussing different narratives together and decided we will have individual narratives for the world. Since our world is made up of different societies I went with the idea of the lower class (e.g. mines, factory, slums)starting a rebellion against the higher-ups for mistreatment and for their rights.

One of the problems we had was that we didn't have enough time to get all the characters design done last week. We had six societies and we only did the first two- the higher and middle class. Therefore, this time we decided to take two societies for each group so we can quickly get this done as it would be hard to design the storyboards if we don't have all the characters. Sian and I took the mines and forest societies and Ryan and Joel took the slums and factory. Josh was absent today, therefore, he would have to choose one later on.

Tuesday- Thursday:

This time around I went deeper than the last character designs I did on the middle-class society. This is because I thought I should have explored more on different ideas and shapes. Taking the knowledge from the character design lesson I've tried the idea of using silhouettes to define the character's shape and personality better. I then choose two to continue on developing on as you can see below:

(I also tried to stay close to the colour palette we discuss in my group weeks ago).

Below shows the side views and emotions of the all the characters I had designed:

Below- characters in-action:

Friday- Weekend:

Narrative- Lower class/societies (working class/ slaves) building a rebellion against the higher class/societies (rich and in-power) for their rights.

I had taken the time to think over the narrative I've decided I wanted a simplistic narrative so that I can build on at later stages without over complicating the story.

One of the other task given was to think of a title sequence. Later decided to go with the group's name 'Dragon's Crown' that was already created together by the group. I personally think it fits perfectly with the narrative of the lower society trying to win the crown (the power) from the higher class and it emphasises the idea of the world is based on the back of a dragon's back/shell.

Week 10 ANIMATIC

Week:

In class, Alec demonstrates to us how he transformed his storyboard into an animatic. This gave me better insight into what I had to do next.

Throughout this week I started working with my storyboard to create a rough short clip of the story. For the process, I had used Sketchbook. The short clip is the intro to the narrative- As the camera follows the bird we are introduced to each of the societies and we can see some of its narrative coming out .e.g. the mines worker are bullied, the higher class are living in luxury while the slums are malnourish etc.

Bird reference:

  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)- Alfonso Cuaron

  • How to Train your dragon 2 (2014)- Dean Debois

For character design from weeks ago I forgot to include the dragon therefore, I took this time to design one as shown below:

This made the animatic process much easier when I have all the characters and designs to work with.

For the design to be recognisable as a dragon I used a dragon anatomy reference from, 'Western red tiger dragon- Draconis Tigruber' by Uberkudzu.

As for the shell, where the world is based on I used Aynsley's (past member of the group) map as the shell. Since this is a group-based project I wanted to continue other members work into mine as I wasn't part of the group from the beginning so it would be very helpful to add it in.

Week 11 ANIMATIC & STORYBOARD REDO

Monday:

On Monday, we had a chance to experiment animating a ball in Adobe Animate. I found this lesson/workshop to be very educating as I had a chance to try out the animatic techniques Alec taught us right after and was able to get feedback right away. We learnt how spacing can affect the subjects timing and using a tool to stretch out the ball can give it personality etc.

Below is a short clip of what I did in class:

Week:

Over the week I looked over my work and found that my storyboards are not up to the quality standard I wanted them to be, therefore, I had them redone in a different template I made myself. This allowed me to add more detail to each shot and have a more neat display.

In order to learn more about camera shots, I came across a great informative site called, 'Studiobinder' where there was an article that went through as many different camera shots used by directors/film.

Week 12 FINAL:

Monday:

Presentation

Monday was the day we presented the work we have done so far. After the presentation, I had received some feedback on improving my animation. I was advised to check the horizon line and someone also mentions the 180-degree rule being broken. One of the problems I faced during the presentation of our short animatics, I was unable to showcase the sound I added in due to some difficulties. However, I was satisfied enough that they could at least see the rough animated scenes I've been working on.

Week:

After watching every classmate animatic, I realised the quality of my animatic is not up to the standard I need to be. Although one of the reasons was that I rushed through it. Since I have more time now I could work on the animatic longer and fix those problems.

One of the big changes I made was instead of using Aynsley's map as the shell of the dragon's back, I decided to create my own version. As shown below, by using Aynsley's map as a guide I design my version.
