3D Digital Literacy (week 13-16)

Updated: Jun 6, 2020

1st year (2nd Semester)

Week 13 Narrative & Modelling

After the long break, we dive into 3d modelling using the program called Maya. Having absolutely no experience in 3D modelling it was hard to get started however not long, I've begun getting the use of it.

Melki began teaching us the basic and got us started by creating a chair then a table. Then we eventually started creating a cylinder with a dip/hollow in it- like a cup or bucket.

Later in class, we were designated to different groups to analyse a short animation film in order to prepare for a presentation in a few weeks coming. As for the group I was paired up with Matthew, Sian, Daisey and Sinead and we analysed the short film called, 'Late Afternoon'.

Practice- snowman

Using the basic fundamentals in 3d modelling, I challenge myself to create a 3d model of a snowman. As shown below, I am pleased with the outcome as it is distinguishable as a snowman.

Week 14 Modelling

On Monday we continue practising 3d modelling. The first lesson was that instead of creating each and individual polygonal shapes for the table legs, we begin using a method called extruding from the block that we already own.

Week 15 House building

For today's lesson, we build a house. I had fun creating this and I enjoy ever moment as I feel like I am getting more use to working with Maya. For the colours I went with an more contrasting appeal.

Week 16 Texturing & presentation

This week's class, we began unwrapping an object in order to add a layer of colour/texture. I had a bit of struggle during class as I was unable to see the colours applied but later found out that I should've turned on the textured icon and this solved the problem for me. Below is a demonstration of my attempt to apply the colour map on.

We were also advised to apply the same method to different objects. It was difficult at the start since you need to know where to cut , for it to unfold correctly.

Here, I have continued practicing this method with different textures/ patterns:

Presentation

'Late Afternoon' Presentation slides (format-PDF):

I think my group did an amazing job in the presentation slides. It was well presented and the colours adds to the theme/vibe of the short film. The delivery of the presentation when smoothly besides me feeling extremely nervous. I ended loving this short film even more after analysing it, as it reveals to have lot of hidden messages which makes it even more endearing. Even though I've never experience any relation to dementia or any similar mental ability, I felt a connection with the character. It made me cherish my memories and love ones even more.
