Life Drawing (Day 1-10)

Week 5

Day 1- First lesson (23th Oct 2018)

This was my first life drawing class so I was a bit nervous but I quickly adapted to the situation after a while. I found it really helpful and I could see how I can apply these tips to my future projects. I also learnt that it's important to create the shape of the model before going into the details so quickly and better to keep your eyes on the model rather on your page. I was able to draw freely with movement and it was a fun experience.

What we did in class:

-Drawing the outline of the model.

-Drawing from inwards.

-Drawing from inwards then eventually creating an outline.

-The two-pencil method- again drawing from inwards- building its shape quickly under a minute.

Day 2 (30th Oct)

I find today's lesson very informative as I've learnt to get out of comfort zone by using different techniques. I was struggling with how I can capture the alignment of the body and finding where the weight of the body is going towards to, but after a couple practices, I've got the essence of it.

What we did in class:

-Drawing with pencils- loose grip, holding it like a dagger, holding the end of the pencil, holding at the tip.

-Visualising the model as a stack of blocks placed in different directions- to capture the twist of the body etc.

-Holding the pencil with a straight arm towards the model to capture the proportion of the body.

Day 3 (6th Nov)

At first, I was struggling with the negative space around the model. It was hard to work around the model but after a few attempts, I think I did a pretty good job. I found this technique to be one my favourites as I found it easier to create the shape of the model accurately.

What we did in class:

-1 min loose drawings

-30 sec Capture the image quickly as if you only had one glance at it.

-Using a cut-out frame to capture the negative space around the model.

-Building up the space to create an outline of the model.

Day 4 (13th Nov)

After a whole rotation of drawing on each other work, eventually, in the end, we can see how our own work has been evolved into which was very interesting. It turned out drastically different to how I would probably finish it. I can spot the areas that I would usually miss which really helps open my mind a bit.

What we did in class:

-no specific time limit (loose drawings)

-bringing the frame closer until it cuts off parts of the body

-drawing over other classmates work- adding what they missed

Day 5 (20th Nov)

I found it challenging to draw a model from a low angle, as I had to figure out its scale in a weird unfamiliar perspective. However, I think I've done a great job at capturing its essence and I've learnt a lot from this.

What we did in class:

-Quick loose drawings

-20-30 min of drawing from a low angle/ from the ground.

Day 6 (27th Nov)

Today's lesson was quite challenging for me. It was tricky to express the fluidly of the stance of the model as parts of the body are hidden behind the frames. However, having the frames helped me to get the proportion more accurately.

What we did in class:

-loose drawings- keep pencil on the page- fluidity- weight/pressure

-capturing the model by using its surroundings

Day 7 (4th Dec)

Today's lesson was great as we started looking at tonal. I was pleased to be able to capture the model without using any defined line as shown in the last picture. If I were to improve on them, I would make sure to keep an eye on the distance between the shadow and the model as you can see I did not present it accurately

.

What we did in class:

-We used an old projector to cast a strong shadow behind the model

-Drawing the model as well as their shadow

-We then started focusing on tonal- using different directions helped us to see the image better and we also avoid drawing bold lines (using only the tone and directions to develop the image.

-Being careful of the weight we press the charcoal, in order to differentiate the dark and light.

Day 8 (11th Dec)

Week 12 was our last life drawing lesson until the next year. Throughout this term, I have learnt many things such as techniques that I could carry into my abilities in animation. Having these classes had helped me to draw characters more natural looking and I can see I have improved my skills in capturing the accuracy of the model's shape/proportions. I found these classes to be very useful and enjoyable.

What we did in class:

-Tonal - using the surroundings to build your model

-capturing each movement of the model- overlapping and arrangement

Day 9 (29th Jan)

After weeks from our break, we went straight back to life drawings. I found life drawings session to be essential to be able to draw people more accurately and it helps my drawing become more alive.

What we did in class:

-drawing from a distance of the paper by holding the very end of a bamboo stick that is attached to a pencil

-drawing while holding the tip of the pencil with the bamboo stick position along the arm

-using the background to bring out the model

Day 10 (Feb 5)

I found that when we were going back and forward with two different drawings of the same model in different angles it helped me to see the drawing as a whole picture as I had to continue from where I left. I realised I can easily see the areas that needed to be fixed, touch up and places that did not look right.

What we did in class:

-loose drawings

-filling the negative space from the edges

-using the background to develop the structure of the model

-going back and forward to two different drawings in different angles
