Life Drawing (Day 11-18)

Day 11 (12th Feb 2019)

This week's class was very interesting due to the change of the model being clothed as well as drawing it in a closer distance. It was tricky to know where to begin but it was a fun experience.

What we did in class:

-Drawing up close to the model

-Drawing a clothed model

-Overlapping the actions of the model

Day 12 (19th Feb)

Working with ink was a lot more difficult than I imagined due to how hard it is to control while painting/drawing. Also having to use a bamboo stick made it twice as hard but it helped to force me out of my comfort zone and become more fluid and less stiff.

What we did in class:

-Handling with ink (and water)

-Painting with a brush that was attached to a bamboo stick.

-Painting on the floor

Day 13 (26th Feb)

For this week I found it more intriguing as I was able to add another colour (red) to the piece, rather than black. Since we were using long bamboo sticks again, it was a struggle to create precise lines. I also found it difficult when drawing the model as they walk since it didn't allow me time to capture the accuracy of the pose. However, the overall outcome was an interesting piece.

What we did in class:

-painting with black and red diluted acrylic paint.

-painting with a brush attached to a bamboo stick and later with a shorter brush

-capturing the model's pose as he/she continues walking- non-stop

-capturing the model form with only 2 lines

Day 14 (5-12th Mar)

For two days we went back to pencil drawings so felt more control in my drawings. My favourite part of the lesson was when the model was using the sack. It was fun capturing the model as he interacts with his prop.

What we did in class:

-props =sack/jar/step

-capturing in motion

-using only two lines

Day 15 (19th Mar)

This was one of my favourite lessons as we got to explore the face. It was very interesting since we were are drawing the face from life and I really like my outcome.

What we did in class:

-continuous line

-contouring around the head from different angles.

-capturing the planes of the face, the areas that are flat/risen etc.

Day 16 (25th Mar)

I had fun creating this in class. It'd helped me to see the structure of the head more clearly and to build it by hand made me look at it in a different way.

What we did in class:

-making a mask by using paper & tape- forming the planes etc. of the face

Day 17 (2nd Apr)

For this week and the week after we were given assignments to do at home as there were no life drawing classes.

  1. self-portrait drawing created by only using touch.

  2. using a mid-tone base create a self-portrait with a light source and this time you can use a mirror to see your reflection. Using Frank Auerbach portrait art as a reference.

  3. using the head structure you create in the last session make a life-size drawing.

Day 18 (9th Apr)

The next assignment...

  1. using a soft pencil create a continuous line to develop a self-portrait.

  2. build up a self-portrait of yourself by creating a series of scribble circles (in pen).

  3. make vertical and horizontal lines to map out your face.

  4. in dark space have only one light source to create a light and dark contrast.

After finishing this task, I find myself more aware of the structure of the head and how the planes of the face are connected. I also feel like my drawing looks more lifelike and less flat looking which I think is a great start of an improvement in my drawings. I will take this information as I model my Organic Model.
