1st year (2nd Semester)
Assignment: 3D Digital Literacy
For this assignment, we are to model/sculpt either a self-portrait or develop your own concept design.
Software- Zbrush
Study- Self-portrait
I've decided to model a self-portrait since I thought it would be a great way to start by learning the basic components before I start diving in a more creative complicated self-created model. This gives me easier access to the model and you tend to know your facial proportions/accuracy better than anyone.

Applying theory:
Applying topology lines over the image:
I've started the progress by learning from a brilliant video tutorial by Edge-CGI 3D Tutorials and more! (Youtube) and then continue the progress with what I know, as well as continuing doing my research along the way.
Modelling the basic shapes first:
Using the 'move tool' to drag the outer area out to match the outline of the reference image.
Next, I started building on the model with its muscles and study its anatomy.
Refining and developing facial features:
Besides using the image reference, I've also had a mirror right by my side to have better 3D dimension vision of the shapes while being aware that the reflection is inverse.

Eyes:
For the eyes, I went and had a look at other artists sculpture and see how they have done the eyes for their model. Instead of drawing the eyes on, I went with the idea of deepening the iris. After looking back on this, I think I should've deepened the pupil further than the iris since it would make more sense as it's the hole of the eyeball.

Skin-

I didn't use many wrinkles due to the age of this model and the still facial expression.
Hair-
For the hair, I've kept it simple by building the model with claybuildup then start indenting strokes to imitate hair.
Final outcome:
I am impressed with the outcome since I think it's a great start for a beginner. There are still a lot of improvements that I need to look over, as it will obviously help portray the character/person more accurately.
Improvements that I think I could've made after analysing the final sculpture as well asking people's opinion:
Face shape should be rounder.
Facial feature size could be improved on.
Facial features need to be more refine and accurate to the model.
Maybe incorporate skin & hair colour next time.
Reflection post:
For this assignment, we were to create a model/sculpture. In the beginning, I had no experience or knowledge on how to use sculpture programs such as ZBrush. However, I heard that in a way it was similar to using clay to build a sculpture but on a computer instead. I have work with clay in real life before so for that reason I already had some sort of knowledge of how to build an object. The class lessons, as well as the life drawing sessions really helped me to get started on how to construct a head. Also, these days there are loads of videos in relation to ZBrush and it was easy enough to follow therefore, I didn’t run into any major problems. After seeing the final product, I was pleased and delighted to see how far I came since the beginning. At the start, I wasn’t even able to get any features right and this motivated me to keep learning. The whole progress was quite enjoyable. I gradually start liking this program and it became quite addictive which is great for me to keep studying and improving.
